About the Department


Academic Duties:

The faculty members in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery are involved in teaching basic science courses to the second and third year dental students and preparation of the study guides, in collaboration with KAU School of Medicine. These core courses are taught with clinical integration and dental application.

 

Teaching the pain control course (OMR 312), which is a basic and essential course in the third year. This course is the first clinical course introduced to the dental student, where the student learns the basic pain control techniques and injection of local anesthesia.

 

Teaching senior dental students principles of tooth extraction and minor surgical procedures and post-operative management complications in the fifth and sixth years (OMR 511 and OMR 611).

 

The faculty members of the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery actively participate in providing academic instruction pertaining to the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery in other dental discipline course like general medicine CCC and prosthodontics in the form of lectures or case based learning (CBL).

 

The department supervises the course: general surgery for dental student (SURD 401) which is taught to the fourth year dental students by the faculty of Medicine.

 

Services:

Specialty Clinic and Operating Room:

The faculty members treat patients in the oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic at the KAUDH. Some faculty members have privileges at KAUH, where admission and surgical procedures are performed in the KAUH main operating room. The faculty perform the full-scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery; dentoalveolar and implants, trauma, pathology and reconstruction, TMJ surgery, facial cosmetic, orthognathic and craniofacial surgery.

 

 

Saudi specialty certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery (SSC-OMFS):

KAUFD is an accredited center by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. The department of oral and maxillofacial surgery is a part of the Western region oral and maxillofacial surgery residency joint training program, a program which includes 3 other government training centers.

The program is a five-year comprehensive program where the residents rotate through the four centers.

The faculty of oral and maxillofacial surgery teach the didactic component of the program of the residents, supervise in the clinic and operating room and administer annual mock structured oral exams.

 

 

Medical Emergencies at KAUFD and KAUDH

The department of oral surgery established the medical emergency unit at KAUDH. This unit is well-equipped to deal with medical emergencies occurring at the dental school. The faculty actively participate in the training of the dental students, faculty and auxiliary staff through hands-on workshops and lectures.

 

Research:

The department of oral and maxillofacial surgery faculty members are actively engaged in clinical and basic science research. The faculty have many publications in peer-reviewed international and ISI journals

Four of the faculty members have been promoted to higher academic ranks in the last three years.

Undergraduate Students research projects. The OMFS department faculty participate in the annual Student Scientific Forum, where research projects conducted by the students are presented and discussed. Many awards were granted to the students supervised by OMFS faculty in the past years.

Internship program Annual research day: Every year the OMFS faculty win one of the top research project prizes at the Annual Intern Research Day.

 

Community Service:

The members of the department participate in the mobile clinic at KAUDH. They offer treatment to those in impoverished and under-privileged areas by means of a fully-equipped mobile clinic.
